Competition Conditions
  • These general conditions apply specifically to competitions organised by FAW-Tasmania Inc. Details of conditions for individual competitions are outlined below.
  • No email entries will be accepted or conditions sent out by email, but we will reply to general enquiries. All contact should be made through our PO Box 234, North Hobart 7002. Do not send to 395 Argyle Street.
  • The author’s name must not appear on manuscripts. The author’s name, phone number, address, email address (if applicable), and the title of the work must be written on a separate sheet. Only the title of the work should appear on the manuscript.
  • Entries should be typed double spaced on one side of the paper only, although under special circumstances a legible, handwritten entry may be accepted.
  • Where possible, send competition entries in DL-size envelopes, which are cheaper to post, are delivered more quickly than large envelopes, and fit more comfortably in PO boxes.
  • Entries must be the original work of the entrant, be unpublished, and not have won a prize in any other competition.  Please do not enter any work currently submitted to another competition.
  • Judge’s decisions are final, and no correspondence relating to these decisions will be entered into.
  • It is a condition, that if a winner of an FAW-Tasmania Inc.competition is unable to attend a presentation meeting, his or her work may be read out at that meeting.
  • All entry fees must be paid by cheque or money order made out to FAW Tasmania Inc. or by electronic transfer to Account name: FAW Tasmania Inc. BSB 067000 Account no. 10567470 Please note on your entry cover sheet if you have paid by Bank Transfer.
  • If, in the opinion of the committee of FAW-Tasmania Inc. there are insufficient entries for any competition organised by them, the committee reserves the right to cancel that competition.

FAW Tasmania 2024 Poetry Prize

for a poem of no more than 60 lines First Prize $150 Second Prize $50

Conditions

  • Open to all writers resident in Australia.
  • Poems must be original, unpublished and must not be on offer elsewhere or have won a monetary prize in any other competition. Length must not exceed 60 lines.
  • Poems are to be typed, single spaced, in plain 12 point font, on one side only of white A4 paper. Please staple pages of longer poems in the top left-hand corner
  • Title only is to appear on poem. Entrant’s name must not appear on the pages. Name and address of author, title/s of poem/s are to be given on a separate sheet. Keep a copy of work, as entries will be destroyed after judging. Judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Entries close on August 31st, 2024 and must be postmarked by this date to be eligible for judging.
  • Results will be announced at the FAW October general meeting and all prizewinners will be notified.

FAW Tasmania 2024 Beatrice Clarke Award for Young Poets 14 and under

First Prize $100, Second Prize $50, Two Encouragement Prizes of $25 each

Conditions

  1. Open theme, up to 40 lines.
  2. Title only is to appear on poem. Give title/s of work, name, postal address, age and school attended on a separate cover sheet not stapled to work.
  3. Entries close on August 31st, 2024 and must be postmarked by this date to be eligible for judging.
  4. Results will be announced at the FAW October general meeting and all prizewinners will be notified.
  5. Entry fee is $5 per poem. Payment options: cheque or postal order payable to FAW Tasmania Inc or pay by electronic transfer: Account name: FAW Tasmania Inc. BSB 067000 Account no. 10567470. 2024 FAW Tasmania CHRISTMAS COMPETITIONS

  • Jacqueline Cooke Short Story Award for a short story to a maximum of 2500 words
  • Norma and Colin Knight Poetry Award for a poem to a maximum of 40 lines
  • Free for FAW Tas members only. Non-members pay a $5 entry fee. Entries close 15 October, 2024

  • Results announced at the Christmas meeting December 2024
(Re: Jess Castle Non-Fiction Award  – due to a lack of entries a decision was made to cease offering this opportunity to writers until there is renewed interest in writing essays and articles from members)

FAW Tasmania 2025 Nairda Lyne Award

for an original, unpublished short story suitable for children aged 8-12 years

First Prize $100 and winner’s name inscribed on a plaque in the State Library Launceston Branch. Hobart Bookshop voucher for the best Tasmanian entry.

Conditions

1. Stories must be original, unpublished and must not have won a monetary prize in any other competition. Length must not exceed 1000 words.

2. Stories are to be typed, double-spaced, in plain font, on one side only of white A4 paper. Pages should be stapled  together in the top left-hand corner.

3. Title only is to appear on story. Entrant’s name must not appear on any page. Name and address of author, title/s of story are to be given on a separate sheet. Keep a copy of work, as entries will be destroyed after judging. Judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

4. Entries close on March 31st, 2025 and must be postmarked by this date to be eligible for judging.

5. Results will be announced at the FAW August general meeting and prize winners will be notified.

2025 Henry Savery National Short Story Award

Held every two years. Open to all writers resident in Australia. First Prize $400 Second Prize $100 Conditions:
  1. Open theme, short story, no longer than 2500 words. Stories must be original, unpublished and must not have won a monetary prize in any other competition.
  2. Entries must be typed, 1.5 or double-spaced, in plain font on one side only of white A4 paper, with pages numbered and stapled in the top left-hand corner.
  3. Story title only on the manuscript: author’s name must not appear. Name, address and entry title/s must appear on a separate sheet.
  4. Entry fee is $5 per story. Payment options: cheque or postal order payable to FAW Tasmania Inc or pay by electronic transfer: Account name: FAW Tasmania Inc. BSB 067000 Account no. 10567470. Please include your surname and COMP as the reference and note on your entry cover sheet if you have paid by Bank Transfer.
  5. Keep a copy of the work. Entries will be destroyed after judging. Judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
